The Mechanical Universe and Beyond

É um documentário que segue as aulas de uma cadeira de Física geral ao nível de alunos de primeiro ano de universidade.  Contém um bom resumo da Física Clássica, entrando ainda um pouco na Mecânica Quântica e Relatividade Restrita. A abordagem é estupenda, com explicações mesmo muito boas! Se por um lado é recomendável a alunos universitários, também o é a leigos, pois na sua componente documental é criada a ponte. Tem simultaneamente conceitos matemáticos, físicos e culturais!

Viagem ao Interior da Memória

Acho que não aprendi nada, mas foi mais ou menos interessante (embora tenha sido curioso ver uma contradição entre este documentário e O Cérebro).

O Cérebro

É constituído por duas partes. A primeira parte tem alguns pontos de interesse, embora ache que se perdem demasiado em questões de certo modo secundárias… Na segunda parte piora, pois misturam pseudo-ciência no assunto central que são as neurociências.

O Cérebro ao Espelho

É um bom documentário. Não concordei bem com os últimos 10 minutos, principalmente na parte em que referem os principais “desafios éticos” do futuro, relacionados com a total compreensão do cérebro. O documentário acabou de uma forma de certo modo estranha: como matar uma mosca.

De Aristóteles a Hawking

Primeiro episódio: documentário bastante fraco. Além de não ter aprendido nada, o documentário foi enfadonho, com erros científicos, com assumpções filosóficas erradas, com fraca exposição de imagens, e um texto completamente fragmentado.

Segundo episódio: não é melhor que o primeiro. Demasiada palhaçada, demasiadas assumpções pseudo-filosóficas, demasiados erros científicos, demasiada falta de noção de como fazer um bom documentário…

(Em certa parte, o homem até diz que prevê que do “embate” de duas galáxias, tudo se poderia desintegrar nas mesmas… O homem não tem mesmo noção do que está a dizer.)

 

Não vi mais episódios, por razões óbvias.

The Story of Science

Primeiro episódio: What is out there?. Boa exposição, boa composição, boas escolhas no que toca ao que deviam de abordar, em suma, um trabalho bastante profissional.
Por acaso não aprendi nada, mas sempre relembrei a aposta do Halley, que já se me tinha varrido quase completamente da memória.

 

Segundo episódio: What is the world made of? Gostei bastante da abordagem. Estava a contar que não aprendesse nada como no primeiro episódio, mas tal já não sucedeu, visto que abordaram questões mais “práticas”, como por exemplo o facto de a revolução industrial da química ter começado com a Malária: a busca da quinina, como medicamento para tratar essa doença, levou à descoberta dos corantes, que por sua vez vieram revolucionar a indústria têxtil, sendo a primeira revolução industrial relacionada com a química.

 

Terceiro episódio: How did we get here? Neste deu para relembrar várias coisas sobre geologia e a sua ligação com a teoria da evolução. Também fiquei a conhecer o Cuvier e a sua paixão pelos ossos – acho que nunca tinha ouvido falar dele, mas é o primeiro homem a analisar os ossos dos Mamutes, acabando por chegar à brilhante conclusão que estes se tinham extinto – o primeiro grande passo em direcção à teoria do Darwin.

 

Quarto episódio: Can we have unlimited power? Nota-se perfeitamente que houve um esforço por evitar em expressar as ideias que são mais conhecidas, focando-se mais em partes interessantes, mas que são menos conhecidas (nos episódios anteriores também se notou bem esta tendência). Falam, por exemplo, do contributo de Simon Stevin – um engenheiro matemático que revolucionou os moinhos de vento na Holanda, ao ter conseguido melhorar a eficiência deles num factor de 3, partindo de um modelo matemático. Também falam de Richard Trevithick, o qual inventou a primeira máquina a vapor móvel, mas nunca foi reconhecido por isso, porque quando tentou o seu modelo, os carris não aguentaram com o peso (mas a máquina funcionava perfeitamente, o problema foi apenas dos carris!). Entre muitas outras coisas interessantes e pouco conhecidas (pelo menos para mim).

 

Quinto episódio: What is the secret of life? Este episódio foi principalmente focado em Medicina e Biologia. Achei curioso a parte do Humbolt ter feito mais de 4 mil experiências com electricidade nele próprio, para descobrir como é que o corpo funcionava (visto que tinham observado que a “coisa” funcionava nos sapos). Mais tarde, pensaram que a electricidade era a “energia da vida”, pelo que andaram a electrocutar mortos a ver se eles ressuscitavam.

 

Sexto episódio: Who are we? Fiquei a saber, entre outras coisas, que afinal o Darwin não foi “apenas” um dos principais mentores da teoria da evolução, como também publicou um importante livro sobre o facto de não só os humanos expressarem emoções, como também todos os animais (ou quase todos). O final deste episódio foi um digno final para esta série documental – quase poético. Aconselho vivamente esta série, a melhor que já vi sobre o tema – história da ciência.

What the BLEEP do we Know Down Rabbit Hole

Foi um desafio ver este documentário/ palhaçada até ao fim, mas consegui. O documentário retrata as falácias da espiritualidade na ciência… Não sei se o pior é fazerem um documentário que irá convencer muita gente de muito disparate, ou se, como vi no final, alguma daquela gente que falou no documentário na verdade tem emprego na sua aldrabice, sendo patrocinados a par de outras ciências! Foi de facto angustiante ver este documentário (embora por vezes também tenha dado para rir, de tanta estupidez). Apesar de tudo, algumas das explicações sobre mecânica quântica e até algumas “dissertações” sobre religião tinham o seu fundamento – pena que fossem usadas para tirar conclusões erradas, ou pelo menos conclusões que não se podem tirar por falta de prova científica.

10 Things You Need to Know About Losing Weight

Embora o método de “prova” seja um pouco ridículo, o documentário acaba por ser bom, pois expressa uma quantidade de informação significativa e importante em apenas uma hora.

Algumas dicas:

1. Diminuir o tamanho do prato! De facto, quanto maior é o recipiente, mais pomos nele, ou se no final deixarmos comida, será numa proporção mais ou menos relacionada com o tamanho do recipiente, o que implica que iremos deixar mais, num recipiente maior.
2. Proteínas (carne e afins) fazem com o estômago se sinta “cheio” durante mais tempo.
3. Comer sopa, ou batidos, em vez da mesma coisa “enxuta” com água, pois no segundo caso a água passa pelo estômago, sem “parar” durante muito tempo, o que implica que o estômago passará a “ver” um volume menor de comida, do que no caso do batido. (Por outro lado, facilitar o trabalho do estômago é algo positivo para se prevenir certas doenças relacionadas com o desgaste do estômago – esta parte não disseram no documentário, mas penso não estar a mentir.)
4. Embora normalmente os lacticínios sejam vistos como algo que faz engordar, a verdade é que, por outro lado, se se comparar uma dieta calórica sem lacticínios e outra com eles, em que se coma a mesma quantidade de calorias por dia em ambas, chega-se ao fim e a dos produtos lactos deram melhores resultados. Isto acontece porque o cálcio impede a absorção de gorduras. (De qualquer forma, leite e afins continuam a ser alimentos ricos em calorias…)
5. Uma dica evidente e que se ouve em qualquer lado: ter uma vida o mais activa que for possível – evitar escadas rolantes, elevadores, etc..

Estranhamente, eles indicam como dica para emagrecer algo que de facto não o é, não passando de indicações úteis:

1. Contar correctamente as calorias. Para quem segue programas restritos de consumo de calorias, não se deve esquecer de contar com os alimentos que supostamente não deveriam contar. Se se comer muita fruta, é claro que é melhor que se comer muito chocolate, mas há lá calorias na mesma! (Pessoas que pensam que seguem o seu programa calórico e não emagrecem, muitas vezes pensam apenas que o seu corpo é que tem um “metabolismo lento”… Na verdade têm que aprender a contar.)
2. Fazer desporto não consome muita gordura no “durante” o exercício, consome sim no “depois” – 22 horas, aproximadamente. Durante o exercício o corpo prefere os hidratos de carbono (como aliás penso que é ensinado na escola, eu pelo menos lembrava-me disto). (Esta não é definitivamente uma dica para emagrecer… Apenas está a explicitar quando é que o exercício produz o seu efeito, o que acaba por ser irrelevante, contando que se faça o exercício.)

Bem, não me lembro de mais dicas (talvez eu tenha condensado algumas numa só).

1000 Places to See Before You Die

O documentário começa com um episódio sobre a Austrália.  Posso dizer que gostei de tudo, excepto da parte de reality show (escolheram um casal para andar a passear), ainda que por vezes tenha sido bem feita a combinação com a parte documental. Fiquei quase com vontade de ir ver um dia o recife ao largo da costa da Austrália (o maior do mundo).

Seguiram-se episódios sobre o Brasil, Cambodja, França, Havai, Índia, Itália, México, Nepal, Peru, África do Sul e Alasca. Gostei principalmente do episódio sobre o Brasil. Achei o documentário sobre Itália muito pobre, tendo em conta o que sei que este país tem para oferecer.

 

Em geral gostei da série, embora não tenha gostado do facto de se terem focado tanto em pequenas experiências do casal, em publicidade a hotéis (que em alguns casos é despropositado e exagerado), e ainda por o casal escolhido não ter normalmente nada de interessante a comentar sobre o que viam, e por vezes até fazerem comentários completamente despropositados (se o objectivo era representarem o casal inculto típico dos EUA, conseguiram).
